By day, Caffe d'Melanio is a coffee temple, filled with City College students and dominated by a huge machine in which the "roastmaster" preps some of the best coffee in the city. The chalkboard menu boasts typical pastries and good sandwiches (roast turkey). By night, though, the cafe morphs into an Argentine restaurant with a heavy Italian influence. Beef empanadas with herby chimichurri sauce, silky cold eggplant with fried yucca chips and linguine fragrant with garlicky tomato sauce over scallops, shrimps and clams are hot items.
