March 2005
Friday, March 11th, featuring Bill Douglass on Bass
Friday, March 18th with the
Black Olive Trio,
featuring Lenny Carlson on guitar, and Yoshi Yamada on bass.
On March 11th, at Caffe D'Melanio, I am very privileged to be sharing the stage with the
bassist Bill Douglass. We will be performing as a bass/voice duo. For
those of you who don't know Bill, he is just incredible! I met him at his jazz
camp last summer, the "Sierra Jazz Society", and I have
been very fortunate to study and play with him over the past year. For you
vocalists and musicians, he is a wonderful teacher, and is available for private
or group lessons--I highly recommend his teaching for improving your
musicianship, ear and style!!!
Bill has been performing and recording since 1965 with world-renowned talents
such as Marian McPartland, Bobby McFerrin, Mose Alison, Terry Riley, Art Lande,
Mark Isham, Bobby Bradford, and Tom Waits. Bill has appeared at major jazz
festivals in the United States and Europe, including Switzerland, Austria, and
Germany. The most recent festival is Monterey Jazz Festival in September 2004
with Marian McPartland. Bill also plays bamboo flute and can be heard on a
variety of soundtracks including "1000 Pieces of Gold," "The Black Stallion,"
and "Never Cry Wolf" as well as on two National Geographic specials.
On March 18th, I am delighted to return to Melanio with my fantastic
guitarist and arranger, Lenny Carlson.
Lenny is a Los Angeles-born guitarist, composer, arranger, producer, and
teacher. He studied guitar with John Collins and Joe Pass. Lenny has performed
at jazz clubs, concerts and hotels and on radio in southern California,
Portland, and the San Francisco Bay area. Lenny has worked with many notable
musicians including Ry Cooder, John Carter, Don Preston, Betty O'Hara, Harold
Mason, Kenny Kotwitz, Gary Barone, and Larry Blackshere. His second recording,
In the Mud, included a selection that earned a 1985 Grammy nomination for Best
Jazz Instrumental Composition. Lenny teaches in the Music Department of City
College of San Francisco and in the Music/Recording Industry Program at San
Francisco State University.
Yoshi Yamada, the young Japanese sensation will be joining us on bass.
